About our greenhouse

Growing strong

Shand GreenhouseShand Greenhouse is a wholly-owned subsidiary of SaskPower and illustrates our commitment to sharing the responsibility of a clean, safe and biologically-diverse environment.

Shand Greenhouse, built in 1991 adjacent to the Shand Power Station, works to offset the environmental impact of generating and distributing electricity over a vast territory. Coal-fired power production, the source of over two-thirds of the province's electricity, is believed to contribute to global warming through carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

The greenhouse supports SaskPower's environmental objectives through programs that increase awareness of the relationship between electrical generation and the environment. It also fosters environmental protection through the propagation of native vegetation.

Taking root

With thousands of SaskPower Shand Greenhouse seedlings taking root across the province each year, Shand Greenhouse is indeed a growing enterprise. Our mandate as a SaskPower subsidiary is to implement programs to increase public awareness of the relationship between electrical generation and the environment, and to foster environmental protection by propagating native plants.

We grow and distribute seedlings free of charge to schools, communities and individuals for conservation and wildlife habitat projects. Interested parties are invited to apply to request seedlings for spring planting.
