Aphids, Aphids and More Aphids!

Some of the most common tree and garden pests in the Prairies are aphids. There are many types of aphids and these tiny creatures (usually 1-3mm) can range in color from black to red to green to yellow to colourless.

The symptoms of their presence are often noted before the insect themselves. Plants leaves may show yellow speckling, curling and distortion. Some aphids may actually cause tissues to swell resulting in galls or swollen branches. "Honeydew" or a sticky sap-like substance may also be seen on leaves and occasionally on decks and cars. This honeydew can attract flies, ants, bees and wasps.

Under warm, dry conditions, aphid numbers can explode and cause considerable damage and even death of a plant in some cases. Careful monitoring is essential to aphid control. As they have many natural predators such as ladybugs and birds, care should be taken when applying any chemical controls and only spot spray "hot spots" if possible. There are many chemical controls for aphids to be found at landscape supply stores—just check the label to see if aphids are listed. Insecticidal soap is also a non-toxic alternative if you must spray.
